Eugene’s House is a “hanok” guesthouse located in Hyehwa-dong, a district in Seoul that preserves the feel of the city from the old times. Once the home of philosopher and essayist Usong Kim Tae-gil, the house was designated as a Seoul Future Heritage in 2015. Renovations that have been done remained faithful to the original form of the 80-year-old house, a square building surrounded by “maru” (raised floor) and a courtyard paved with “bakseok” (stone pavement). The guesthouse is a 5–10 min walk to the Seoul City Wall and the Daehangno, while Naksan Park and Ihwa Mural Village can be reached in 10 min by car, making the guesthouse an ideal base camp for explorations of Seoul’s alleyways.
There are six rooms in total, offering both traditional Korean-style floor bedding and bedrooms. It offers various rooms ranging from a single room with plush cotton beddings to the attic, which is a children’s favorite, a room with “daecheongmaru” (open-air floor area in the center of hanok), and the study with low table and books. Four rooms come with private bathrooms, while guests in two other rooms may use the shared bathrooms. The entire hanok complex may be rented in entirety for different purposes, such as small wedding ceremonies, soirées, or meetings. Multilingual staff members offer services in English, Japanese, and Chinese aside from Korean, and the guesthouse offers a Korean- style complimentary breakfast as well.
